Countdown to HALLOWEEN!: 2 Days :)

 #2
Potion Cabinet
For the past several years I have made a "potion cabinet" of my own. This is a simple and spooky way to make your home look a little creepier around this time of year. You can find tons of printables online or just make your own. This year I made some labels of my own. Typically for mine I print the label and glue them to scrapbook paper that has a gothic look and then wrap the paper around boxes and jars that we already have at home. :)
Here is a link that you can print several labels from to get you started! :) Love Manor: Potion Labels

Theses are some pictures from my very own "potion cabinet" ;)

Lessons from Mr. Magorium

If you have never seen the movie "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium you need to. It's a movie about a magical toy store with a magical owner. Like a lot of movies made for kids... this one has several deep moments in it that really make you think. It's one of my favorites... watch it and you will see why. ;)
Below are some of my favorite lines from the movie.. :)

Mr. Edward Magorium: I fell so completely in love with these shoes, I bought enough pairs to last my whole lifetime. This is my last pair.

Mr. Edward Magorium: [to Molly, about dying] When King Lear dies in Act V, do you know what Shakespeare has written? He's written "He dies." That's all, nothing more. No fanfare, no metaphor, no brilliant final words. The culmination of the most influential work of dramatic literature is "He dies." It takes Shakespeare, a genius, to come up with "He dies." And yet every time I read those two words, I find myself overwhelmed with dysphoria. And I know it's only natural to be sad, but not because of the words "He dies." but because of the life we saw prior to the words.
[pause, walks over to Molly]
Mr. Edward Magorium: I've lived all five of my acts, Mahoney, and I am not asking you to be happy that I must go. I'm only asking that you turn the page, continue reading... and let the next story begin. And if anyone asks what became of me, you relate my life in all its wonder, and end it with a simple and modest "He died."
Molly Mahoney: [starting to sob] I love you.
Mr. Edward Magorium: I love you, too.
[picks Molly up, sighs heavily]
Mr. Edward Magorium: Your life is an occasion. Rise to it.
Molly Mahoney: I knew it. As soon as I saw that suit.
Henry Weston: Knew what?
Molly Mahoney: You're a 'just' guy.
Henry Weston: What's a 'just' guy?
Molly Mahoney: A guy just like you. Same hair, same suit, same shoes, walks around, no matter what, you think it's all just a store, it's just a bench, it's just a tree. It's just what it is, nothing more!
Henry Weston: Alright but, but this
[looks over his shoulder]
Henry Weston: is just a store.
Molly Mahoney: I'm sure to you... it is.

Molly Mahoney: [after they have set all the clocks forward in a shop to strike noon at the same time] Now we wait.
Mr. Edward Magorium: No. We Breathe. We Pulse. We Regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. Thirty-seven seconds, well used, is a lifetime.

In short... this movie, though made for kids, has lots of scenes that are very thought provoking. It has on more then one occasion brought me to tears. :) Check it out!

Busting At The Seams

I recently stumbled upon a little sign that said "May our home always be too small to hold all our friends". Miranda and I had been walking around the St. James art fair for a good part of the day and we found the sign in one of the little shops we passed by. :) She saw it first and showed it to me and I absolutely loved it... (actually upon reading it I cried a little... I know, I'm such a sap.) I loved the little sign so much I bought it. It's small.. (a magnet) and it's now hanging on our fridge. :)

As some of you know, Dan and I have lived in an apartment since we got married... I'm completely fine with this.. I loved our first apartment and I like this one pretty well too. Even growing up our house was decently sized but not a big house so I suppose that is why this hit home with me so much. I've never been bitter about living in a small house. It's not about the size of the house... it's about making it a home.

Dan and I were some of the first in our group of friends to get married, and as such our home has always been a kind of landing place for our friends... at times... packed to the brim. :)  I love the sentiment of this little sign because I think it speaks of a very important lesson.... All that you have, all that you work for, and all that you own will one day be gone. We, as humans, have such a tendency to collect "stuff". We buy houses and we fill them with stuff until they will hold no more and then... we buy a bigger house. ;) (Some people take this to the extreme, but that's not what I'm talking about here.) I like lots of those "things we fill our houses with" too... I won't pretend not too... but the lesson isn't lost on me.

It's not about what you have, it's about WHO you have.

I hope that I never forget this... :)

Think Before You Speak

Lately I have been thinking about the common things that people often say to each other. As a culture we tend to use certain phrases just because they are typical to us... often they are things we hear often or things we say without much thought. The more I think about the phrases below the more I think that we should all carefully consider what they really mean.
1. It's just the way I am. Yes, it's true. We are all our own person. We should all be individuals to a certain degree but we should be careful with what we apply this to. "Just the way I am" shouldn't be applied to a behavior that is sinful or hurtful to others, or something that is bad for us. If being a hurtful person, or frequently lying is a habit of yours it MAY currently be "the way you are", but is that how you really want people to see you? Those kinds of things require a change in character. If their is any hope left for us, we should want to work to change those things about us that aren't good. This is often an excuse.

2. YOLO. (You only live once.) Right now, this is for some reason a "trendy" thing to say. It's not inherently wrong, but similarly to what I said before... it's not an excuse to do something wrong or dangerous. You only live once... yes... so do your best to be the best person you can be. Have fun, go on adventures... but life isn't about making all the mistakes you can because "Why not?".. Live for something more then what momentarily makes you feel good; Often those things are the worst things for us.

3. You are closed minded. Some people take their beliefs to the extreme. Causing someone hurt or pain because of your belief IS WRONG, regardless of what that belief is. There is nothing wrong with sharing your belief about a certain issue as long as you are kind and considerate. As people who are given our own minds and personalities we should take the time to listen without immediately deciding that they are rude for sharing something that opposes our belief. Debate is healthy but don't forget to be mature.

4.  Let me show you a better way. It may not always be said that way... but I think that lots of people have a tendency to want to take over and do things the way they think is best. The truth about doing this is that we sometimes step on each others toes in the process. I'm bad about this myself sometimes, but it's something that I am working on. The easiest way for me may be different then the easiest way for someone else.... and even if it's not easier, they may want things that way. Respect it or at least try your best to compromise. :)

5. Well at least I didn't ________.  Truly, this does not matter, and we all know it. The point is if something has been done own up to it and take responsibility for it. What you did should not be in comparison to how bad someone else messed up.

In conclusion... always think before you speak & you will be much better off... :)

Fall! :)

I love FALL! I love just about everything about it... :) Pumpkins, Halloween, Thanksgiving, chili, scarves, sweaters, boots, & so much more!! The weather is perfect... the crisp chill in the air that makes it cool enough to wear a sweater or keep comfy in a jacket..

Thanksgiving is great, of course... we all see our families and eat tons of yummy food and set aside the day to be thankful for everything that we have... but if you know me at all, you know that I am sort of obsessed with Halloween. I get excited for Halloween before October even gets here; I start thinking about parties and costumes before any of the stores start putting Halloween items out.

We started the tradition of having a Halloween Party every year because we love it so much and we found that, for adults, we didn't have a whole lot of options that still allowed us to dress up and be silly without drinking the night away.. (That may be your style, but it is not mine...) We wanted a party where our friends could come and have a blast & keep the Halloween magic alive, even for adults. Every year we have gotten more into the party... adding on to decorations and garb & party festivities. From the first of October (sometimes late Sept!) on our house looks somewhat like we are crazy... :P We go all out on the decorations & we are in a constant process of decorating. It's SO much fun! :)
If you like this, check out these other fall related entries on my blog:

To get you in the spirit.... here are some of the costumes we have tried in the past... ;) In this order... Ketchup & Mustard, Princess Peach & Mario, Jack & Jill-after they fell down the hill, & Cowboy & Indian.
